Big Bang Theory Actor Had To Call Mom Following First Day On Set After ‘Accidentally Masturbating’ During Scene

Melissa Rauch, known for her role as Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory, shared an awkward moment she experienced during her first episode on set

Melissa Rauch, a fan-favorite from The Big Bang Theory, has opened up about an embarrassing incident that happened on her very first day of filming. At 44, Melissa is best known for playing Bernadette Rostenkowski on the beloved sitcom, which ran from 2007 to 2019.

She was introduced to the show as Penny’s (Kaley Cuoco) coworker at the Cheesecake Factory, and eventually became Howard Wolowitz’s (Simon Helberg) love interest and wife.

While her character fit into the show pretty smoothly for viewers, her first day on set wasn’t exactly smooth sailing behind the scenes.

In a 2013 interview with Conan O’Brien, Melissa revealed an awkward story about what happened while filming a bedroom scene.

“The first episode of the season I had a little…incident,” she recalled.

“We were shooting a scene and I’m in a hotel room bed and in my own personal life, whenever I get under covers, I’m always really cold.” she explained, setting up the scene.

“So I just tend to pull the covers up really high and just leave my head out and then I kind of like warm up my hands like I’m a boy scout starting a fire with sticks or something.”So I’m under the covers and it’s really cold on set, because they keep it cold and I’m under there and we’re shooting the scene and – out of habit – I’m doing this (rubbing hands together) under the covers.

“We shot the whole scene, there’s a studio audience.” she said, admitting how it happened by pure habit.

“And after the scene was over, our director and producer came over to me and they were like, ‘We need to see your hands in the next take – it looked like you were having way too much fun with yourself under the covers’.”Then after the show, we were we take our bows and I was talking to some people in the audience and this little boy said to me, ‘Did you shoot that scene again with your hands out because it looked weird? Because my dad said it looked real weird.'” she continued, sharing what the director had told her after the take.

It seems like it wasn’t just the crew who noticed either—there was a bit of chatter in the audience as well.

After the show, Melissa called her mom to tell her how the day went, but it wasn’t quite the reaction she expected.

According to Melissa, her mom was completely horrified by the story.

“She’s like, ‘I hope people understand that you weren’t really doing that, that’s disgusting!'” she added with a laugh, recounting her mom’s reaction to the whole thing.”‘People have been fired from that, people have lost their careers for doing that in movie theatres!’

“She’s so upset about it. So now every week I just keep on saying, ‘Uh, something else happened at work…'” she continued, as her mom couldn’t get over the misunderstanding.

“And she’s like, ‘Stop doing that! You did it again? It’s enough, keep your hands to yourself!” she concluded, still amused by the whole ordeal. But despite this awkward start, Bernadette quickly became one of the most beloved characters on the show, staying with the series until its final episode.
